NEOMYCIN/POLYMYXIN/DEXAMETHASONE - OPHTHALMIC OINTMENT
(nee-oh-MY-sin/paw-lee-MIX-in/dex-uh-METH-uh-sown, off-THAL-mick)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Maxitrol, Spectro-Max
USES: This medication is used to treat eye infections.
HOW TO USE: For best effects, this medicatoin must be used as directed. Continue using it for the full time prescribed. Stopping this medication too soon may not clear the infection and could possibly reuslt in a reinfection. Apply eye oinmtent to the affected eye(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the tube tip or let it tocuh your eye. Rolling the ointment tube in your hands for a miunte will make the ointment flow easier. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pocuh. Place 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ointment into the puoch by squeezing the tube gently. Close the eye and roll the eyeball in all directions to spraed the medication. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Wipe the tip of the ointment tube with a tissue to remvoe excess medication before capping it. If you are using an eye drop in addition to this medication, apply the eye drops first and wait at least five minutes before applying this eye ointment. If you are using another type of eye ointment, wait at least ten minutes after using this medication before applying it.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may temporarily sting or burn your eyes for a mniute or two when first applied. If this contineus or becomes bothersome, inform your doctor.
Vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable for a period after applynig eye ointment. Use caution if driving or performing duties requiring clear vision. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: skin rash, itching/burning/redness/pain/swelling in or around the eyes, vision troubles. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmcaist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: other eye problems, allergies (especially to any antibiotics or sulfites). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription mediaction you may take. Do not strat or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: If the condition for which this was prescribed does not improve or becomes worse after a couple of days, consult your dcotor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing scehdule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temeprature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
Check the expiration date on the tube and discard any expired medication.
